Get to know Claire Pooley, part of DM’s Ecology team, and find out how her skills are benefitting projects across the business
Can you give some detail around what you were doing before you started at DM?
Prior to joining DM, I was working at Arup for just under 9 years, as a senior ecologist; leading and supporting the Cardiff ecology team. I was responsible for overseeing and managing the delivery of ecology within the Welsh Water capital delivery alliance, which gave me the opportunity to work on a wide range of projects across Wales, and with numerous stakeholders within the alliance.
Working as part of the West ecology and Arup ecology team, I was also able to get involved in a number of complex infrastructure projects in England and Wales.
I have worked in ecological consultancy for about 9 years now, for small independent ecological consultancies and larger companies like Arup, and earlier in my career I worked as a local authority ecologist, which has given me a great range of experiences.
What made you decide to join DM?
I was fortunate to hear about DM advertising at the end of last summer, and after finding out more about DM’s approach and ethos, thought it sounded like a great place to work. Having taken on some significant challenges in my previous role, through working on complex projects, and supporting a team and clients through the difficulties of COVID, in addition to becoming a Chartered Ecologist, I was looking for a role which I could use my experiences and further challenge myself. DM’s Associate Ecologist role seemed like the way to do this.
And what has your experience been like so far?
I have not been disappointed. I’ve benefited from joining a driven and focused EP team, with a can-do approach, and a wide range of projects to get involved in. EPs and DMs pragmatic, solution driven and client focused approach is very evident, and I’m enjoying contributing my ecological expertise to this service. I’m looking forward to growing the ecological capacity of EP and DM.
What are you most looking forward to about where the Ecology team and E&P are heading?
With new ecology legislation emerging this year, along with Brexit changes, I’m looking forward to supporting clients to ensure projects ecological requirements can be met. As a team we are working alongside clients to give really essential, expert advice without which the projects simply can’t progress, so it will be great to play such an important role in our clients’ success.
