5G is the next generation of mobile technology and it’s important because it will create numerous advantages for users and businesses.
The government wants the UK to become a world leader in digital infrastructure and this requires us to become a leader in 5G. An incredibly important ambition as people want access to broadband services wherever they live and work.
5G is expected to bring substantial benefits in a number of areas, including healthcare, energy, agriculture and retail, and make a real difference in transport, such as drone delivery and manufacturing. Just think about the improvements to health and social care from remote health monitoring or better control of energy consumption.
That’s why the government has introduced reforms to telecoms planning policy and the New Electronic Communications Code to make it easier to build mobile networks and bring about much needed improvement in connectivity. 5G will require the rollout of lots of small cells (base stations) and this will require lots of parties (local authorities, utilities, property owners etc.) to play their part putting consumers and the general public first, by enabling better mobile connectivity. The sharing of sites and telecoms assets will make the rollout of 5G happen more quickly and efficiently, resulting in improved customer experience, faster connection speeds and far reaching benefits for the public to enjoy along with the business community.
