Learn about eligibility, training, and what it’s like to start your career with us.

Whether you’re thinking about applying or you’re going to be starting with us soon, this page answers some key questions about our graduate programmes.

You’ll also hear first-hand from DM graduates about their experiences of joining the team.

What graduate programmes do you offer?

We offer graduate programmes across Land & Property, Environment & Planning, and Geomatics.

 

Do I need previous experience to apply?

No – we don’t expect you to have previous industry experience. But you will need to have a full UK driving licence and the right to work in the UK.

What qualifications do I need?

You’ll need a relevant degree in your programme area. You can find the details for each one on our graduate programme pages: 

 

Are graduate roles paid?

Yes – all graduate roles at DM are paid. The salary for each role will usually be included in the job description.

 

How long is the graduate programme?

Most of our graduate programmes run for around 24 months, with structured development throughout.

 

Where will I be based?

Where you’re based depends on which programme you’re on, but it will be in one of our main UK offices in Bignell, Bristol, Crewe or Tewkesbury. Plus, you’ll get the chance to travel across the UK and Ireland

What is the application process like?

Our application process is designed to be simple and supportive. You can find a full breakdown of each stage on our hiring process page.

But in a nutshell, it includes an application, an initial phone chat, and an assessment day where you’ll have the chance to meet the team and take part in interactive activities.

 

What are you looking for in candidates?

We’re looking for people who are curious, motivated, and ready to learn. 

 

What does a typical week look like?

There’s no fixed ‘typical week’ at DM. Your time is usually split between office-based work, team collaboration and getting out on site to see live projects.

“I do something different every day – that variety keeps me on my toes and means that each day I’ve learned a new skill or a new fact about land referencing.”

“I get out on site about once a week, attending landowner and agent meetings, so I get a good variety and the chance to see the project firsthand rather than just working from the office.”

Will I work on live projects?

Yes – graduates work on live projects from early on, contributing to major infrastructure schemes across the UK and Ireland.

“I have gained lots of confidence in delivering professional advice to my client. My critical thinking and problem solving is a skill that has had to develop quickly while working on large projects with various stakeholders” 

What kind of work will I be doing?

Your work will vary depending on your discipline, but it will always be hands-on, challenging (in a good way) and connected to real projects.

 

What support will I get as a graduate?

You’ll be supported from day one by your team and line manager. Plus, you’ll get structured development through the DM Academy.

"From early on, DM supported me by providing a supervisor and counsellor who made sure I understood the process and key timelines in preparation for my final assessment. On top of that, colleagues were always happy to give up their time for mock questioning sessions as the assessment approached, which really helped me sharpen my knowledge and refine my answering style.”

How does training work?

Training combines on-the-job experience, structured learning and professional development sessions through the DM Academy and your team.

“The Graduate Training programme provides an excellent structure to help me understand my progression, where I’m going and my goals for the future. The training is always comprehensive and allows me to put my newly learned skills into practice, and everyone is always keen to help me reach my goals and really solidify my learning.”

What is DM Academy?

Our DM Academy offers great support for all graduates, with a range of online training sessions that are easy to access and really useful for developing your skills. You will find out more information about this when you start.

 

Are there any things I should know before my first day?
